Bauhaus slatted chair

Lot 7577 limit € 2.800

Design: Marcel Breuer, model: ti 1a, design from 1924, armchair composed of dark-stained oak slats, dark fabric cover renewed, very good condition from a well-kept private collection with few signs of wear, approx. 97 x 56 x 60.5 cm, Copy Weimar 1924 or Dessau 1925. The slatted chair by Marcel Breuer (1902-1981) is considered an incunabula of Bauhaus furniture production. Breuer had studied at the Bauhaus Weimar from 1920-24 and was an apprentice in the carpenter's workshop from the winter semester of 1920/21. From 1925 to 1928, as a young master, he took over the management of the furniture workshop at the Bauhaus, which had now moved to Dessau. In addition to his early designs such as the slatted chair, Breuer had a considerable influence on furniture design in the 20th century, above all through the development of various tubular steel chairs. His early designs from 1922/23 are all made of wood and break with conventional aesthetic ideas. The construction of slatted frame and fabric surface exudes a sculptural character, but meets all the functional requirements of sitting. Breuer first developed a slatted chair in 1923 (possibly even as early as 1922), which was part of the furnishings at the Haus am Horn. The carpentry workshop at the Bauhaus Weimar produced a small series of a slightly modified design from his hand in 1924 and 1925 in Dessau, with both oak and maple specimens being known. The chair received the workshop number ti 1a. See reference Bauhaus furniture. A legend is visited, Berlin 2002, p. 96f. and p. 326
