Dahl is considered, together with his friend Casper David Friedrich, to be one of the outstanding representatives of Dresden Romanticism, both painter friends lived together in a house on the left bank of the Elbe.The work offered is one of several known smaller variants as preliminary work for the painting in large execution ( Bang 972, Rasmus Meyer collection, Bergen from 1843, cf. Bang 951, owned by the Niedersächsische Landesgalerie Hannover).
