Oil/wood, studio scene, oil sketch, four artists in the studio at the easel painting, verso inscribed "Untersteller", simple black framing, slight signs of age, approx. 26 x 24 cm, with frame approx. 35 x 42 cm, 1920/30s years, the Lorraine artist Nicolas Untersteller studied at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg from 1921-23 and then at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1928 he was awarded the Grand Prix de Rome and spent 1929-31 in the Villa Médicis in Rome. Back in France, he opened a painting school in Metz and in 1937 became a teacher for fresco technique at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and from 1940 professor ibid.
