Meissen manufactory, swords underglaze blue, 2 cuts through, designed by August Gaul 1922, revised by Max Esser, model no. A 1054, standing and alert looking "lioness", on square base signed "A GAUL", white porcelain, 1 base corner slightly damaged, approx. 32 x 46 cm, after 1948; August Gaul (1869-1921), animal sculptor and graphic artist, studied at the Academy in Hanau and Berlin, 1894-98 worked in the studio of Reinhold Begas, member of the Berlin Secession and the German Werkbund, 1908 professor, his animal sculptures always appear very lively, was one of the greatest German animal sculptors of his time, from his estate the Meissner manufactory acquired twenty ornamental figures in 1922
