Mezzotint engraving on paper, The Lord of the Vineyard Paying his Labourers, 1766 engraving by William Pether (1738-1821) after the famous painting by Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669), printed by John Boydell, London, good condition commensurate with its age, set behind glass in a wide gilded Empire frame, plate dimensions approx. 51 x 40.5 cm, with frame approx. 70 x 60 cm, the framing from the 19th century. The depiction is based on the parable from the Gospel of Matthew chap. 20 verse 1-16 (Of the workers in the vineyard) ending with the Bible verse So the last shall be first and the first last. Another copy of this engraving is held by the British Museum London. The artist William Pether specialized in reproduction engravings after Rembrandt, but also by other artists of the 17th and 18th centuries, almost all of which were published by John Boydell in London.
