Oil/reinforced canvas, hermit in a forest hut studying, surrounded by forest animals and observed by gnomes, signed lower right and dated 1852, gilded original stucco frame, approx. 38 x 51 cm, with frame approx. 57 x 70 cm, fine detailed depiction in the tradition of the great late romantics Moritz von Schwind and his painter friend Adrian Ludwig Richter, AW Walther gained worldwide fame with his most famous work, the Fürstenzug in Dresden, 1843 studied at the Dresden Art Academy with Julius Hübner, Gottfried Semper and Carl Gottlieb Peschel, freelance from 1855 active, 1878-1900 professorship at the Dresden Academy
