Hirzel 1985, gold embossed half leather, slipcase, hardly any signs of age and wear - extremely collectible condition - superb edition, suggested in 1838 by Salomon Hirzel, Moritz Haupt and Karl Reimer, the German dictionary became the lifework of the Brothers Grimm, which laid the foundations for a German philology as literature and linguistics. As the successor to Weidmann's bookstore, S. Hirzel Verlag took over the publishing of the German dictionary in 1853. The dictionary contains the vocabulary of the written German language from the 15th to the 20th century. Each recorded word is traced back to its earliest occurrence, i.e. the main features of its development in Middle and Old High German are also presented. All basic words are explained etymologically; likewise the derived ones, insofar as the relationships are not unambiguous. After the death of the founders, a large number of linguists continued the work. The aim of the German dictionary is to provide a representation of the German vocabulary that meets both the demands of specialist science and the needs of a wide range of users.
