Meissen manufactory, swords underglaze blue, 3 cuts through, white porcelain, seagull floating over the crest of a wave, Art Deco bird figure based on a design by Max Esser 1937, mounted on a dark wooden base, wing tips slightly damaged, total height approx. 38.5 cm, after 1937. In the spirit of his teacher August Gaul, the animal sculptor Max Esser (1885-1945) perfectly understood how to combine the nature of the depicted animal with the clear, elegant lines of Art Deco. Working at the Meissner manufactory since 1919, Esser headed the master workshop from 1923 and was responsible for a number of figures that were famous for their beauty of form.
