Pierre Jules Mêne (1810-1879) is one of the most important animal sculptors of 19th century France. Above all, he created small-format sculptures of domestic and farm animals, which were very popular among the bourgeoisie of the Second Empire. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory took over some models from the well-known "animalier" posthumously.
