Oil/wood, landscape with river and waterfall, shepherd family and herd of cattle as staffage, wooden panel with cracks, old restored, unframed, approx. 42 x 54 cm, Johannes Nicolaus Treu was a descendant of the well-known Bamberg family of painters Treu. His grandfather was the Bamberg court Jew Wolf Nathan. His father converted to the Catholic faith and took the name Joseph Marquard Treu. As a student of his father, Johannes Nicolaus specialized in portraits. Under Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim he came to Würzburg, where he was appointed valet, court painter and gallery inspector. Among other things, he created the high altar picture of the Augustinian Church in Würzburg and the painting of the Nikolaus altar in the pilgrimage church "Käppele". Many of his works are in the Historical Museum and in the New Residence in Bamberg and in the Main Franconian Museum in Würzburg.
