Oil/canvas, Italian landscape, verso titled: "Via Appia antiqua", signed lower right, probably the most famous road in Italy lined with evidence of Roman architecture and travelers, attractively colored depiction, probably preparatory work for a later large-format painting, renewed magnificent gold frame matching the Painting, approx. 31.5 x 41.5 cm, with frame approx. 57 x 65 cm, 1839-41 studied at the Düsseldorf Academy and was significantly influenced by his brother Andreas and by JW Schirmer, numerous study trips to Italy, among others, intensive Studied nature, 1863-1872 teacher for landscape painting at the Düsseldorf Academy. O. Achenbach's oeuvre is shaped by the Rhenish landscape, the Italian Campagna and the landscape around Naples. His depictions of nature are often staffed with idealized staffage figures, with lively coloring and atmospheric lighting, which brought him great public success throughout his life.
