Oil/wood, inscribed "Bay of Naples" on the reverse, unsigned, probably an oil sketch, at least three oil sketches for the painting "View of the Gulf of Naples" (around 1832, 48 x 72.5 cm) by Carl Blechen are known, the sketches probably served the artist to prepare the painting, it cannot be ruled out that the work offered is another, previously unknown preliminary study for the privately owned painting, framed with a gold strip on the inside, approx. 14 x 16.5 cm , with frame approx. 27 x 30 cm, Blechen began studying at the Berlin Academy of Arts in 1822, was appointed professor of landscape painting ibid. in 1831, appointed a full member of the Academy of Arts in 1835, 1881-82 collective exhibition in the National Gallery under the direction of Prof. Jordan (Lit.: Thieme/ Becker)
