Oil/canvas, titled on the reverse: "Venedig", view of St. Mark's Square from the Canale Grande with the Doge's Palace and clock tower, signed lower right and also inscribed on the reverse "C. Gorbatoff", 1920s, narrow wooden frame, approx. 66 x 100 cm , with frame approx. 72 x 106 cm, provenance: Chemnitz private collection, since acquisition probably in the 1930s via the Chemnitz Gerstenberger Gallery, always in family ownership, Gorbatov first studied engineering in Riga before devoting himself to painting. In 1905 he began his studies at the Petersburg Art Academy. In the course of the revolutions in Russia he left his home country in 1922 and initially lived on Capri. In 1926 he moved to Berlin, where he lived until his death in 1945. Gorbatov is considered an important representative of Russian Impressionism and was honored during his lifetime with an exhibition in the Abels Gallery in Cologne in 1931.
