Achenbach, Andreas (1815 Kassel - 1910 Düsseldorf)

Lot 3054 limit € 4.500

Oil/canvas, "Italian landscape", view over torrent and trees on the lake in front of mountains, signed lower left and dated 1843, canvas with craquelure and minor color flaking due to age, matching magnificent stucco frame (min. dam.), approx. 49, 5 x 60.5 cm, with frame approx. 82 x 90 cm. The painter, graphic artist and caricaturist A. Achenbach, brother of Oswald Achenbach, was already a 12-year-old student at the Düsseldorf Academy, including in the landscape painting class of JW Schirmer. In 1836 Achenbach moved to Munich, but was based in Düsseldorf again from 1839. In 1859 he was appointed professor at the local academy. His preoccupation with landscape painting is based on numerous trips, including to Holland, Norway, England, France and Italy. Many of his landscape and marine pieces, with which A. Achenbach became one of the most important representatives of 19th-century painting in Germany, are evidence of great detailed realism, bright coloring and a fine use of light.
