Meissen manufactory, swords underglaze blue, first choice, design by Johann Joachim Kaendler around 1732, a monkey sitting on a tree stump with an open snuff box in his left hand and a chain, his right hand leading to his nose, discreetly naturalistic painting, gold equipped, invisible rest., H ca. 47.5 cm, after 1948; Together with Gottlieb Kirchner, the court sculptor created a porcelain menagerie comprising around five hundred pieces, which the elector had commissioned for his Japanese palace. It was intended to form a western counterpart to August's East Asian porcelain collection. In the French Rococo, depictions of monkeys imitating human behavior were very popular.
